Dabog
- "Gift Lord" South Slavic. A clear cognate with Dazhdebog,
below. Some sources, however, hold that Dabog is an earthly, rather than
aerial, figure and that the two should be differentiated.
Dagda - The Irish-Celtic God of the earth and treaties, and ruler over life and
death. Dagda or the Dagda ("The Good God") is one of the most
prominent Gods and the leader of the Tuatha de Danann. He is a master of
magic, a fearsome warrior and a skilled artisan. Dagda is a son of the
Goddess Danu, and father of the Goddess Brigid and the God Aengus mac Os.
The Morrigan is his wife, with whom he mates on New Years Day.
Damballah - Voodoo serpent-God that lives in trees, especially those near
springs. Damballah has his origins in Dahomey as Da, the force of
life.
Danu - The Irish-Celtic Earth Goddess, matriarch of the Tuatha de Danann
("People of the Goddess Danu"). Danu is the mother of various
Irish Godes, such as Dagda (also mentioned as her father), Dian Cecht, Ogma, Lir,
Lugh, and many others. Her Welsh equivalent is the Goddess Don. One
of the three aspects of Morrighan, that of the mother of the Gods, she who was
before the Earth was formed, and Goddess of wisdom, Queen of Heaven.
Danu - Hindu Goddess of primordial waters.
Dazhdebog - "Gift Lord, The God of Gifts" East Slavic God of sun
and warmth, son of Svarog and one of the eight primary Slavic deities. He
is regarded as the ultimate ancestor of the Russian people, and even today a
poetic reference to Russians can be made using the phrase "children"
or "grandchildren of Dazhdebog."
Demeter - Greek Goddess of harvest crops, Giver of grain and fruit. Sister
of Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon. Corresponds to the Roman Goddess Ceres.
Devaki - Hindu Mother Goddess, she bore Krishna and Balarama.
Devapurohita - Hindu astral God associated with the planet Jupiter.
Devi - Hindu Mother Goddess. Goddess of women and creating. Also
known as Mahadevi.
Dewi - An old Welsh God. The official emblem of Wales, a red dragon, is
derived from the Great Red Serpant that once represented the God Dewi.
Dhanistha - Hindu Goddess of misfortune.
Dhanvantari - Hindu physician of the Gods, teacher of medicine to humans.
He was originally the sun God.
Dharti Mata - Puranic Hindu Mother Goddess.
Dhruva - Hindu God of the pole star.
Dian Cecht - The great God of healing and the physician of the Tuatha de Danann.
He made the silver hand for his brother King Nuada to replace the one he lost in
battle. Dian Cecht had blessed the well, Slane, in which the wounded
Tuatha de Danann bathed. It healed all their wounds so they could resume
their fighting. He had a son, Miach, who he slew out of professional
jealousy. Miach had replaced the silver hand Dian Cecht made for Nuada
with Nuada's own hand. Some claimed it was jealousy, while Dian Cecht said
it was the disrespectful manner in which the replacement was done. He is
the grandfather of Lugh.
Diana - Italian Triad Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone. Goddess of
outcasts, outlaws, slaves, and oppressed peoples. Diana encompasses many
other Goddesses, and her name is also used for the Moon Goddess, Earth
Goddess, and Star Goddess.
Diana - Roman Goddess of the Moon, the natural world, a huntress and protectress
of animals. A perpetual maiden, she corresponds to the Greek Goddess
Artemis.
Dianus - Italian nature God of fertility, similar to Faunus except that he is a
Stag God instead of a Goat God. He is also known by the name Kern or Cern.
Dionysus - Greek God of the vine and fertility, of the joyous life and
hospitality. Son of Zeus by a mortal mother. He gave Greece the gift
of wine - at times a blessing, at others a curse. Corresponds to the Roman
God Bacchus.
Discordia - Roman Goddess of Discord. Corresponds with the Greed Goddess
Eris.
Dispater - Roman Underworld ruler of the dead, similar in many respects to
Hades.
Diti - Hindu Earth and Mother Goddess.
Div - "Miracle" Slavic God of the miraculous, also a God of the
wildwood who was hostile to humanity. At first he was God of clear sky,
but the tales tell that he was overthrown from the sky by Perun, and settled in
the thicket of wood.
Diviana - Roman Great Mother Goddess. Goddess of Protection.
Represented the Mother of Earth, protecting and watching over. She
symbolizes learning from the past, accepting life with love and understanding,
and caring for the child living within each one of us all. Associated with
the owl.
Dolya - "Fate" Slavic Goddess of happiness and luck. The
Domoviye. (sing Domovoi). Any of a class of household spirit,
animistic tutelaries of hearth and home who function as guardians and helps or
hindrances in household affairs.
Duamutef - "Praising his Mother" One of the Egyptian Four Sons of
Horus; he protected the stomach of the deceased.
Durga - Hindu Goddess who represents the power of Supreme Being which stands for
morals and ethics. Warrior Goddess who is an aspect of Devi. She is
fierce and invincible, and depicted as a beautiful yellow woman with ten arms,
sometimes standing on a lion, carrying weapons in each of her ten hands.
Dyau Pita - Hindu sky and rain God. Originally the chief Hindu God, he
eventually forfeited his position to his son, Indra, the father of the Gods.
Also known as Dyaus.
Dyke - One of the three Greek Goddesses known as the Hours. The Hours are
responsible for organizing the seasons and adding balance to nature. Dyke
means "justice." They corresponds to the Roman goddesses, the
Horae.
Dylan - Welsh sea God, brother of Lleu.
